No meat on Fridays?
How about Saturday breakfast steak?
BOOOM!! I win. 🙂
After a couple days of breakfast sandwiches, we decided to step it up for the weekend and grab some brunch. Instead of hitting one of the usual haunts, we tried somewhere we’ve never been before – The Beach Break, a small stand-alone restaurant on the side of Federal Highway.
We must have shown up at the perfect time because the place was full but we didn’t have to wait for a table. Everyone seemed to be in a good mood – both patrons and staff. And we could quickly see why – good food on the griddle and a selection of inventive brunch items. I almost went for the Rajun Cajun Eggs Benedict (served on crawfish cake topped with Andouille sausage Hollandaise sauce), but instead I chose the Breakfast Burrito. I was really craving meat after abstaining yesterday for the first Friday of Lent, and this burrito comes stuffed with steak! Also comes with a side of black beans and fresh salsa.
Susan decided to go with a mushroom, Swiss, and spinach omelet. She was very specific on her potatoes – she wanted to know if they came diced or shredded. Their home fries are diced and their hash browns are shredded, so she went with the latter.
Needless to say we were very impressed and we’ll be back soon! And let me tell you – their bacon looked marvelous… must come back when I can try it!
Today was a strange day. No plans. No street fairs, no festivals, no basketball games, no beach plans, no football yet, no boating plans. What’s not strange is my craving for meat, thanks to “no meat Friday” yesterday. In the wee hours of Saturday morning, I usually have dreams about grilling steak, so when I woke up, I promptly went to Publix and picked up a nice sirloin for myself.
Later on, I realized it was National Grilled Cheese Day – yum! For a reason that will remain nameless, my friends Danielle and Lora just love grilled cheese and tomato soup (or as they call it, “chermater soup”), so I whipped up this little ditty to share with them… if not in person, then by text message. 🙂
Yeah, that’s 3 different kinds of cheddar cheese, baby!
Tomorrow is another “no-meat Friday”, so we decided to “go big or go home” – so hence, steak. As far as sides, Susan made a chopped salad and I made a mac ‘n’ cheese casserole.
I like my steaks medium rare. The problem grilling to medium rare is that most of the steak is overcooked, and only the center is that delicious pink medium rare that you crave. This is from the “tried-and-true” method of flipping a steak only once during grilling. Well, I found an amazing new method of flipping multiple times to cook your steak so that it’s medium rare most of the way through, with only a sliver of each side being well done – and it takes 30% less time than the old-school single-flip method! You can check out the mind-blowing multiple-flip method at http://www.seriouseats.com/2013/07/the-food-lab-flip-your-steaks-and-burgers-multiple-times-for-better-results.html
So today my girlfriend is taking the yacht out for one of her monthly “Cruisin’ with Susan” events. But how am I going to make a noon boarding time in my weakened state? I mean… no meat on Fridays? You bet I’m in a weakened state!
Then I had an epiphany… steak for breakfast! So at 8:30 this morning, I rushed to Publix while everyone was sleeping (read: passed out) around the condo, and picked up a nice 12-ounce rib-eye. I threw it on the grill and popped a bottle of champagne for mimosas, and at 9am… voila! A nice protein-packed breakfast before cruising!
Well, my friends used the champagne for mimosas by adding some orange juice to their glasses… I opted for the straight champagne with my breakfast steak. 🙂
So, I made the noon boarding time after all, and fun was had by all!
Y’know, the corned beef & cabbage from Duffy’s yesterday was such a filling meal, there was enough for a late breakfast/early lunch, so I wasn’t worried about any bacon cravings this afternoon – the salt-cured corned beef was enough for me. But since I’ve been depriving myself of my favorite meat candy, I decided to eat more of my second-favorite… steak.
So tonight we did New York Strip, scalloped potatoes, and green beans.
That was only one portion – don’t worry, there was more where that came from.
